I always loved the arrangement of this song. The angelic harmonies entering at 1:38, the subtle organ licks by Billy Preston, especially at 4:22 when Billy's part adds a real gospel flavor. Of course, any song that creates a powerful emotion is aremarkable creation.

Yes, the voices were great but I think it was much more than that. We had INSTRUMENTS then, lots of instruments being used to produce a song that have been totally lost & not being used in today's music, which I think made a song more melodic, sometimes sweet, pretty -- the general sound seemed more enjoyable, not overly loud & harsh. One of the greatest instruments always used in the '50's doo-wop was the fantastic saxophone. There were also horns, strings, piano used later on. And in the BIG BAND era we had the delicious clinking sound of the xylophone -- like the clinking on a glass. And while many singers had powerful voices, they didn't yell when they sang. All that is gone.
